Magical rock pools of Gran Canaria: El Agujero

The north of Gran Canaria is a real paradise as far as natural landscapes are concerned. All along the coast, you can find beaches, small coves and, above all, the famous natural pools such as those found in El Agujero de Gáldar.

Located in the northern municipality of Gáldar, the first capital of Gran Canaria, these authentic natural pools have become over time a natural space where you can relax and find peace, since there’s no massive concentration of tourists.

Today we want to share with you this little piece of natural space that Gran Canaria has to offer. If you want to come and visit this part of the island, don’t miss out on our tips.

How to get to the pools of El Agujero

The area around El Agujero is very close to the historic centre of Gáldar. However, getting to the pools is a bit tricky, as you have to cross several narrow streets and slopes around the historic centre, where there are hardly any signage.

However, if you have any problems finding your way, our recommendation is to use the GPS or type in "El Agujero-Gáldar" in Google Maps, and you’ll arrive at this true paradise.

In the surrounding area, there are several car parks next to the beach, so parking is usually easy.

However, if you don't want to travel by car and prefer to use public transport, bus lines 103 and 105 will take you from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to the centre of Gáldar. When you arrive, you can take one of the public transport lines that you can catch at the station itself, which will take you to El Agujero in 10 minutes.

El Agujero: natural pools, surfing and history

At El Agujero there are a lot of things to do, even if the place isn’t very big.

On its small but charming promenade, you can walk along the beach area and the natural pools, enjoying the surroundings and its picturesque houses

In addition to the natural pools, El Agujero also has a beach with golden sand. It’s the ideal beach for a day out with family or friends.

Don't forget your goggles to watch the fish swimming next to you, as this area of the island has a lot of marine life.

And if you love surfing, you're in luck. At one end of El Agujero, you’ll find one of the best bodyboarding areas in EuropeEl Frontón

Every year, the best bodyboarders in the world come together to compete in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, the Frontón King, which has one of the best waves in the world for this sport.

El Agujero isn’t all about beaches and surfing, it’s also about the history and culture of the Canary Islands.

In its surroundings you can find one of the most important archaeological sites in the Canary Islands, the archaeological site of La Guancha

It’s a complex made up of 6 aboriginal constructions, some tomb constructions and a kind of tier associated with an old courthouse.

Where to eat in El Agujero

As this is an area somewhat distant from the centre of Gáldar, the services available in the area are quite limited.

However, you have the option of eating in the quaint little restaurant Tú Mismo, or La Marejada, with breathtaking views of the sea and the beach of El Agujero.

If you prefer, you can go to Gáldar and enjoy a nice lunch at Tasca de Juan Pedro or Trastienda de Chaco, both next to the town square.

If you want to enjoy an authentic experience in the Agujero de Gáldar, and you haven't chosen a hotel yet, you can stay in a unique and emblematic place in the city, just 30 minutes away from the centre of Gáldar. The Hotel Acuario LifeStyle is located in the Santa Catalina Park
